If you’re looking for a coast‑to‑coast ride with real character, the Reivers Route is as wild as it gets. This 173‑mile (280km) adventure crosses northern England and the Scottish Borders, weaving through landscapes shaped by centuries of Border Reiving history. Over four days you’ll roll from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, taking in the Cumbrian coast, the northern Lake District, Northumberland National Park and the quiet beauty of North Tynedale. Expect memorable off‑road sections through Kershope Forest and around Kielder Water, with overnight stops in Carlisle, Bailey Mill and Bellingham. The route works for touring and hybrid bikes, mixing smooth roads with rugged forest tracks.
The guide also includes the Borderers Ride — an alternative coast‑to‑coast journey from Gretna to Berwick‑upon‑Tweed. This route links the best middle section of the Reivers Route with a northern loop through Wooler and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne before finishing at Berwick. Both rides offer incredible cycling on quiet lanes, gated roads and peaceful paths, with rolling hills, remote forests and plenty of historic sites along the way.
Inside, you’ll find everything you need to plan your trip. Each stage includes 1:100,000 mapping, route profiles, clear directions and notes on points of interest. The introduction covers local history, bike and kit advice, and transport options, while the appendices list useful contacts for bike shops and accommodation. Whether you’re chasing a new challenge or exploring the Borders at a slower pace, this guidebook has you covered.
